Adventurous Kerala – Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Periyar Nature Reserve is located in the mountains of Western Ghats in Idukki district of their own country, God, Kerala. It covers an area of 777 square kilometers and is one of the most famous shrines of India.

The history of this park dates back to 1934 when the Maharaja of Travancore, on the recommendation of the warden, SCH Robinson turned the area around the lake in a sanctuary as the sanctuary Nellikkampetty. In 1966, the sanctuary was placed under the forest department and the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was created. It was finally declared a tiger reserve in 1978. In 1991 the park was brought under Project Elephant. The park was formerly known as the Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary.

Formed in 1895 with the construction of a dam on the Periyar Lake is now a major source of water for animals and resident birds. Approximately three quarters of the sanctuary is covered with evergreen forests and semi evergreen rain and the area remaining area is covered by the Periyar river and the river Pamba.

Periyar is home to the most exotic fauna and flora. Houses about 62 species of animals, ranging from the fierce tiger deer calmer. There are about 35 to 50 tigers in the sanctuary of Periyar and the majority of tourists come here to take a look at the tigers to enter the forest. The animal of interest for tourists is the Indian elephant. It is a wonder to see this huge animal play recklessly by the Periyar lake. There are about a thousand elephants in this sanctuary. Other kerala forestanimals that you see here are leopard, common langur, mouse deer, Malabar squirrel, India wild dog, Nilgiri langur, lion-tailed macaque, and porcupines, Bonnet Boar, Sambar, macaques, Nilgiri Thar, Dhole and Barking Deer . King cobras and pythons, both poisonous snakes are very common in the park.

Speaking of birds, there are about 180 species of them, including the kingfisher, darts, cormorants, great Malabar Hornbill and racket-tailed drongo. Tourists who are interested in identifying these birds should wear glasses with them.

The best time to visit this park is between the months of November to May This is because during this period, the water points in areas of dry forest and the animals that live along the sea to get water for drinking and bathing in water.

During a visit to the sanctuary of Thekkady or Periyar, do not miss the boat cruise on the lake. Thus, we can both enjoy the beauty of Lake Periyar and sight seeing wild animals while enjoying a boat ride. Trekking, hiking at night, in particular, is an attractive option for those who have the energy level to undertake this expedition. Prior authorization must be obtained for that purpose by the Ministry of Forests.
